Empty the zipper track before forcing it
Small kibble crumbs and powder can keep the two sides of a resealable bag from engaging. Hold the bag upright, brush loose food away from the track with a clean dry utensil, and press the seal from one end to the other. Do not use household lubricant on food packaging. If the zipper strip is separating from the bag, repeated squeezing will not restore the original seal.
Check the food after an accidental open period
Look for moisture, insects, unusual odor, or a change in appearance. Follow the food maker's storage and after-opening guidance rather than judging freshness only by the printed expiration date. If contamination or mold is suspected, do not feed the food. Keep the package information and lot code available in case you need to contact the manufacturer.
Keep the original bag when practical
If you use a separate bin, placing the original food bag inside a clean, dry container can preserve the label and reduce direct contact with old food oils in the bin. Choose a container large enough that the bag is not crushed and the lid can close fully. If you pour kibble directly into a container, wash and completely dry it before adding a new batch.
Choose a package size your cat can finish reasonably
A very large bag may stay open much longer than a smaller one. Compare your cat's normal daily portion with the manufacturer's storage recommendations. A clip can help fold an undamaged bag, but it does not repair a torn seam. Store food in the temperature and humidity range recommended on the package and away from pets that may chew through it.
