Check why the cover moves before fastening it
Remove your dog and lay the cover over the empty crate. Check whether the cover is simply too large, whether a slick fabric slides on the wire top, or whether your dog can pull an edge through the bars. A cover that is caught in a door or draped onto the floor can create a chewing target. Do not use pins, loose clips, cords, or elastic loops where your dog can reach them.
Keep every intended vent and door clear
Follow the crate and cover manufacturers' instructions for which panels should remain open. A cover should not reduce airflow around a dog, especially in warm rooms or during travel. Feel the room temperature rather than assuming a dark crate is cooler. If your dog pants unusually, seems distressed, or repeatedly pushes at the cover, remove it and reassess the setup.
Fit matters more than pulling the fabric tight
Compare the crate's actual length, width, and height with the cover dimensions. A fitted product can still shift if a door panel is folded the wrong way or the crate has a nonstandard handle. Use only the cover's designed closures, keeping them outside the dog's reach. Never tie a cover tightly around a crate in a way that could interfere with a door opening.
A cover is optional, not a requirement
Some dogs settle better with one or two sides visually screened; others become warmer or more worried when enclosed. Try a partial cover only while you can observe your dog's response. If the dog tears and swallows fabric, stop using the cover. The crate should remain a comfortable resting space with a secure door and adequate room, regardless of whether it is covered.
