Check whether debris or wear is causing the weak hold
Take the raincoat off your dog and press the cleanest section of the hook-and-loop closure together. Compare it with the hairy section. Fur, lint, and grass can block the hooks, while flattened or missing hooks point to material wear. Also inspect stitching around the strap. A closure that is pulling away from the fabric needs more than cleaning.
Remove loose hair without damaging the fastener
Follow the coat maker's care instructions. Pick out loose fur gently with an appropriate blunt cleaning tool while the coat is off the dog. Avoid sharp blades near webbing and do not melt or trim the hooks with heat. Close the fasteners before machine washing if the label says to do so, which can reduce snagging on other fabric.
Refit the coat after cleaning
Put the dry coat back on and check that you can secure it without pulling the strap unusually tight. Your dog should be able to walk, sit, and breathe normally without the coat sliding sideways. Weak Velcro should not be compensated for by overtightening around the chest or belly. If the closure releases during normal movement, retire or properly repair the coat.
Choose the next coat for fit and maintenance
Look for adjustment points that match your dog's chest shape and a closure you can keep clean. Reflective trim can help visibility but does not replace a secure fit or safe walking route. If your dog chews loose straps or hardware, remove the coat when it is not needed rather than leaving it on unsupervised.
