Open every fold before adding water
Set the empty bowl on level ground and press each accordion ring into its intended open position. If one side springs inward without pressure, the material may be warped. Do not hold a collapsing bowl with your fingers beside a thirsty dog's muzzle; switch to another container for that stop so your dog can drink calmly.
Use less water to test stability
A bowl filled to the rim can slosh and flex when a dog pushes its nose against the side. Start with a smaller amount on a flat surface and refill as needed. Grass, a sloped curb, or a soft car seat can make a flexible bowl tip even when the bowl itself is intact. Keep the drinking spot away from traffic and hot pavement.
Look for damage along the fold lines
Repeated folding can create tiny splits, sticky areas, or thinning material. Wash the bowl as directed and inspect it in good light. Retire it if cracks trap residue, pieces are coming loose, or the rim no longer holds its shape. Glue and tape are poor repairs on a surface used for drinking water.
Pack a backup for long drives and hikes
A second clean bowl or another safe drinking container prevents a small gear failure from limiting water access. Let your dog drink at appropriate breaks rather than waiting for signs of intense thirst. If your dog refuses water repeatedly, vomits after drinking, or seems weak or overheated, address the dog's condition rather than focusing only on the bowl.
